Thing Booksは、毎年開催されるSingapore Art Book Fair（SGABF）の創設者かつ主催者であり、SG Art Book Libraryのもとで刊行された印刷物のカタログを所蔵する、シンガポールにおけるアートブックのイベントと取り組みの拠点である。アーティスト・ブックとジンへの理解と鑑賞を深めること、そして書物を芸術的メディウムとして探究することを促すことを使命としている。
Founder and organiser of the annual Singapore Art Book Fair (SGABF) and home to a catalogue of published print materials under the SG Art Book Library, Thing Books is a centre for art book events & initiatives in Singapore. Our mission is to deepen the understanding and appreciation of artists’ books & zines, and encourage the exploration of the book as an artistic medium.

The Institute of Critical Zoologists（ICZ）は、ロバート・ジャオ・レンフイ（Robert Zhao Renhui）によって設立されたアーティスト主導のプロジェクトであり、人間と動物の世界との複雑な関係を、美術、リサーチ、そして思弁的な物語を通して探究している。写真、映像、インスタレーション、出版物などさまざまなメディウムを横断しながら、科学、フィクション、自然史のあいだにある境界をゆるやかに横断するプロジェクトを展開している。今回のフェアでは、現代の風景をめぐるフィールドガイドやアーカイヴ、あるいはオルタナティブな動物学的研究として機能する書籍や印刷物を紹介する。
The Institute of Critical Zoologists (ICZ) is an artist-run initiative founded by Robert Zhao Renhui that investigates the complex relationships between humans and the animal world through art, research, and speculative narratives. Working across photography, film, installations, and publications, ICZ produces projects that blur the boundaries between science, fiction, and natural history. At the art book fair, ICZ presents a selection of books and printed matter that function as field guides, archives, and alternative zoological studies of contemporary landscapes.

アーティスト ロバート・ジャオ・レンフイ（Robert Zhao Renhui）は、「The Institute of Critical Zoologists」の名のもとで書籍を出版しており、その作品は動物を人間がどのように見るかという「動物学的まなざし」に対して批評的にアプローチしています。彼は2013年のSingapore Art Book Fairの第1回に出展し、それ以来継続してアーティストブックを制作してきました。シンガポールにおいてアーティストブックというジャンルをいち早く推進した存在のひとりであり、多くの若いアーティストに自身の本やジンを制作するきっかけを与えています。
Artist Robert Zhao Renhui publishes books under The Institute of Critical Zoologists, whose works take a critical approach to the zoological gaze, or how humans view animals. He exhibited at the Singapore Art Book Fair in 2013, our very first edition, and has been consistently making artist books since. He was one of the first in Singapore to champion the artist book genre, influencing many young artists to make their own books & zines.

Thumb Booksは、シンガポールのアーティスト ライ・ユートン（Lai Yu Tong）によって設立された小さな出版社で、子どもと大人の両方に向けた本を制作しています。ユートンは、ドローイングやイメージ制作、彫刻、音などを横断しながら活動しています。人がイメージを生み出し、物語を語ることへの根源的な欲求を前提に、現在を表現するためのメディアを探り続けています。私たちは、彼が美術学生としてジンを作り始めた頃からその活動を見てきました。この12年のあいだに、彼のアートブック制作が深い感受性とともに発展していく様子を感じています。
Thumb Books is a small independent press founded by Singaporean artist Lai Yu Tong that makes children’s books for both children and adults. Yu Tong works across drawing, image-making, sculpture and sound. His practice is interested in creating adequate media to articulate the present, believing in the intrinsic need for humans to make images and tell stories. We have been huge supporters of his works since he started making zines as an art student, and through the past 12 years we’ve seen how his art book-making practice has developed with such deep sensibilities.

レネー・ティン（Renée Ting）が運営するプラットフォーム Thing Booksは、シンガポールのアートブックシーンの成長において非常に大きな影響力を持ってきました。長年続くSingapore Art Book Fair（SGABF）の主催者であり、アートブックを表現の媒体として発展させ、広めるためのさまざまな取り組みを行ってきた存在として、コミュニティの多くがThing Booksとレネーに敬意を抱き、インディペンデント出版のシーンを支え続けるその姿勢に励まされています。Thumb Booksは、まさにThing Booksが育ててきた土壌から芽吹いた存在とも言えます。本を出版する人にとって、それを流通させ、世界に届けるための場がなければ成立しません。私自身も、レネーが働いていた書店で販売するためにジンを制作し始め、2016年には他の若いブックメーカーたちとブースを共有して初めてSGABFに参加しました。そして2017年には、地元のアートスペースの一員として本を販売していた際にSGABFでRenéeと出会いました。それから時を経て、現在では私たちは結婚し、同じホームスタジオを拠点にThing BooksとThumb Booksをそれぞれ運営しています。
Thing Books, a platform that is run by Renée Ting has been really influential in growing Singapore’s art book scene. As the organiser of the long-running Singapore Art Book Fair (SGABF) and of various other initiatives to grow and promote the art book as a medium of expression in Singapore, a lot of us in the community look up to Thing Books and Renée for constantly fighting to keep the indie publishing scene alive. Thumb Books is technically a seed that has sprouted from the soil of this ground that Thing Books has been caring for. No one who publishes books would do it without avenues to distribute them and share them with the world. I first made books zines to sell at a bookstore that Renée was working at, then participated in my first SGABF in 2016, sharing a booth with some other young bookmakers, and first known Renée at SGABF in 2017 while selling books for a local art space. Fast forward to today, me and Renée are married and we run Thing Books and Thumb Books separately from the same home studio.
